In 1986, Rikki Jai started a near-four-decade-long love affair with soca music.
Jai, born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, San Fernando, on October 17, 1964, first made a name for himself in music with the 1989 fusion hit “Sumintra”.
Anyone who grew up in the early 90s will remember Jai’s music videos for “Pumpin”, “Show Me Your Motion”, “Wine on a Bumsee” and “Turn Yuh Waist”—all of which enjoyed regular rotation on TV.
Since then Jai has gone on to become a chutney soca music icon, winning the Chutney Soca Monarch title a record nine times with genre-defining classics like “Dulahin” (1998), “River Lime” (2003) and “White Oak and Water” (2011), among others.
Thirty-eight years later, the Jaimaster, as he is fondly called by colleagues, is paying homage to his soca origins with his 2024 Carnival release, “Soca Till I Die”.
