    Birth and Early Life

    John Garang de Mabior was born in 1945 into a humble Christian family of the Dinka Nilotic people in Southern Sudan.

    Orphaned at the age of 10, he persevered through hardship, completing primary school with the support of relatives.

    Military Service and Education

    At 17, Garang joined the rebel movement in the First Sudanese Civil War.
